Igniting the Pulse of South African Music: The Festival Enterprise Catalyst Networking Sessions
In March 2025, across three iconic South African cities, something extraordinary happened. The Festival Enterprise Catalyst (FEC) in partnership with Concerts SA brought together artists, activists, venue owners, scholars, and creatives under one mission: to power up the live music scene, one connection at a time.
From Johannesburg’s soulful Afrikan Freedom Station to the jazz heart of Durban and the creative energy of Cape Town’s The Commons, the FEC Networking Sessions became a spark of possibility—a celebration of music, resilience, and community.
Johannesburg – A Tribute to Spirit and Song
📍 Afrikan Freedom Station | 🗓 22 March 2025
Under the dusky glow of a Joburg afternoon, music lovers and cultural workers gathered at the legendary Afrikan Freedom Station. Wines, soft cheese, and warm conversations opened the night, followed by the Concerts SA documentary screening, setting the stage for a panel on keeping live music venues alive.
The Women in Live Music Graphic Exhibition by the acclaimed Judy Seidman. Her portraits pulsed with colour and defiance, honouring 11 iconic women who shaped South African music history
The evening crescendoed with a powerful performance by Menyatso Mathole and crew, sending waves through a crowd that included UK jazz powerhouse Estelle Kokot, and visual artist Judy Seidman, Dr Tu Nokwe to mention a few.

Durban – African Dance & Music Roots and Rising Jazz Voices

In Durban, the beat was grounded and powerful.
Kicking off with the soul-stirring Azibuyele Emasisweni: Back to the Roots performance
The session moved to the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM), where the Concerts SA documentary: Keeping the Music Alive into reflective conversations and a lively panel led by cultural titan Andre Le Roux.
Zethe’s electrifying set later that evening brought the house down, joined by local music visionaries and academics. Durban’s community voiced strong concerns about venue access, government support, and post-COVID rebuilding—but left inspired to act.
Cape Town – Stories, Sax, and Sonic Fire

In Cape Town, the energy was electic.
Industry veterans including Lloyd Ross, Mandla Mbothwe, and Mark Rosin shared hard truths and hopeful visions during the panel. Their voices echoed in a space where stories of challenges became blueprints for new futures.
Nomadic Orchestra lit the night on fire, horns blazing, as audience members danced between insightful networking conversations and jazz-driven joy. The Commons buzzed with creative electricity.
